Seven Fundamental Principles

HUMANITY

TRCS gives humanitarian aid of people who become vulnerable during crisis or disasters. Its purpose is to protect life, health and dignity, mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation among all people.

The Red Cross Movement serves people; not systems.

IMPARTIALITY

TRCS makes no discrimination as to nationality, race, religion beliefs, class or political opinions. It endeavours to relieve the suffering of individuals, being guided solely by their needs and to give priority to the most urgent cases of distress.

The Red Cross Movement cares for the victim and for the perpetrator alike.

NEUTRALITY

TRCS does not participate in political, racial or religious discussions or disputes. During armed conflicts, the TRCS does not take sides when providing assistance.

The Red Cross Movement takes initiatives but never sides.

INDEPENDENCE

TRCS whilst auxiliary to the government and subject to its laws, maintain its autonomy to be able to act in accordance to the principles of the movement.

The Red Cross Movement bows to needs but never to Kings.

VOLUNTARY SERVICES

People participating in TRCS activities do so with a commitment not prompted in any manner by desire for gain.

The Red Cross Movement works around the clock, but never for personal gain.

UNITY

There can be only one Red Cross or one Red Crescent Society in any one country. It must be open to all. It must carry on its humanitarian work throughout its territory.

Divided we fall; united we stand. Unity of National Society.

UNIVERSALITY

TRCS is a member of the International Red Cross Movement implementing Red Cross objectives in Tanzania. All Societies are equal and share equal responsibilities and duties in helping each other worldwide.
